13.1 Changing Fork Oil, A Warning.

The Matchless handbook states that the only way all the oil can be drained out of a fork leg is by dismantling the leg completely.

There will always be between 50-100cc of oil left inside the leg if the oil is drained from the drain holes, and more if the top caps are not loosened or removed.  Serious leakage usually means dismantling is a good idea - there may be other damage inside the tubes.

So, What this actually means is that your dutiful owner will be changing the fork oil over the years and the amount of oil will actually just be increasing and increasing, until you get a major leak, at which time the forks are striped and seals replaced. Exactly what happened in my case.

You got it in one!  Generally, deduct between 100 and 150 cc of fork oil when doing a drain and fill.  The BMW dealer didn't do this servicing my bike, and I went to fetch it with the trailer.  Pulling the tiedowns up blew both seals.  Was I pissed?  At $45/hour?  Betchyerass.  Last time they saw my wallet!  Pete the cheap.
