Someone just recently authoritatively opined that the 2S makes a big sacrifice of low end for big bhp at high revs. Think they said the 4S gave the top end  without losing the low. And then went on to recommend certain Megacycle grinds.  Alas, I didn't save it. But it may have been Pete Serrino. And the Norton News had someone's evaluations a year or two ago. But I won't be into it for awhile.

I ain't planning no roadracing, just sport touring and little dirt riding once in a while when I am out in the country exploring abandoned stage roads, canals, and railroads.

Norton described their cams as:

S (standard) Touring, road work, (same as the 650SS cam).

SS Sport cam.

SSS Proddy race cam.

SSSS Full race cam.

Having said all that:

I knew people in the 70s who used SS cams, and they seemed happy with them. I never used one myself.

I once used a SSSS cam in an 850 with .040" milled off the head to raise the c/r, it gave very strong top end power. It rattled like two skeletons copulating on a tin roof with it's .016" lash.

I can get you the phone number for megacycle if you want it, they will fax you information. For a full description of all known Norton cams, see the 1996 NOC handbook. (Which I'm sure you have, being a NOC member).
