I checked out my S type headlight ring and this is the best I can do to describe what I have which is what has been described as a S type setup. First, the ring is constructed of heavy duty tubing with a heavy chrome plate. The function of the ring, and the attaching "arms" is to create a structure into which you can hang a headlight. My bike does not have headlight bracket/upper fork tube shrouds. If it had them (as on my Bonneville) the headlight would be attached between these brackets on the left and right fork tubes.

On my bike all one sees in the fork tube area between the upper and lower triple tree is fork tubing. Got it so far?

Ok, there are two studs that extend forward on either side (left and right) from the front facing side of the lower triple tree. The studs are located in the area of the casting between the fork tubes. On the lower side of the headlight ring there are two "tangs" that are an integral part of the headlight ring. These "tangs" run "back" in a plane that is perpendicular to the plane of the circumference of the ring, then turn "down" and end. The "ends" are drilled to fit the studs that I previously mentioned located on the lower triple tree.
Now we have the ring attached to the motorcycle, right?

Ok, go "up" the ring midway. There you find two teardrop shaped "tangs" that extend backwards that have slotted holes like the headlight bracket/upper fork tube shrouds mentioned before. Now this is where I might lose you.
The headlamp fits into the ring. Those big fine threaded headlight attachment bolts, pass through the "tangs" on the ring and thread into the headlamp shell as you are accustomed to seeing. To create rigidity and stability, there are two weirdly twisted pieces of chromed tubing that connect the upper part of the ring to the upper triple tree.

The attachment process is as follows. The two pieces of tubing (left and right) are about 5 inches long. On one end they are flattened and drilled with a hole, the other end in flattened and has a slot milled in it. The flattened portions are in perpendicular planes. The end with the hole is attached to the underside of the upper triple tree. (By the way when I say "triple tree", you can substitute "fork yolk".) The pieces of tubing thusly attached extend forward and down so that the slotted end meets the slots in the aforementioned "tangs" on the headlamp ring. Now, to button everything up you pass the big fine threaded bolt through the tang on the headlight ring. After it passes the tang on the rim it passes through the slotted end of the aforementioned attached pieces of tubing.

Finally it passes a spacer, then threads into the headlamp shell. The bolt "sandwiches" the rim, the upper attachment tubing and of course the spacer. There you have it . A rigid setup. Now Olav if this is not clear let me know, I will gladly do my best with a drawing and fax it to you . Just let me know.
